Demo guide:
pick the right build.

Yes, Steam lists a free Shroom and Gloom demo—but the Steam Demo, itch.io Prototype, and paid Early Access game are three separate version lines.

The short answer

A free Steam Demo is currently listed on the main store page. Team Lazerbeam also hosts an older Prototype on itch.io. Neither should be treated as the same build as the paid Steam Early Access release.

Demo, Prototype, and Early Access compared.

Version lineVerified identifierHow to treat it
Steam DemoApp 3602770
Build 23718635
A separate free Steam app. Its public branch was built June 13 and updated June 14, 2026, according to SteamDB.
itch.io PrototypeVersion 0.4.77.1An official older prototype for Windows and macOS. Use it to explore the project's roots, not to verify current Early Access cards or progression.
Steam Early AccessApp 3271280
Build 25221077
The current paid development release. Its public branch was built and updated September 10, 2026, according to SteamDB.
Build IDs are version markers, not feature lists. SteamDB confirms which public branch build was visible at the time of checking; it does not prove which cards, characters, quests, or save rules are inside a build.

Which version should you play?

Try before buying

Use the Steam Demo shown on the official store page. It is the clearest current free entry point, though its content may trail Early Access.

See the early concept

Use the official itch.io Prototype if you specifically want development history. Do not follow its card or progression details as current advice.

Play the live release

Use the Steam Early Access app for the current paid game and ongoing updates.

Prices vary by region and over time, so this guide does not quote a fixed purchase price.

Do demo or prototype saves carry over?

We have not found an official carry-over promise. Because the Steam Demo is a separate app and the itch.io release is explicitly labeled Prototype, do not assume that saves, quests, unlocks, decks, or character progress transfer into Early Access.

If preserving progress matters, check the latest Steam announcement or discussion before starting a long run. This page will only mark transfer as supported after an official statement or repeatable current-version test.
